Working memory and the rewards you create
This week’s message is clear: your brain is not a single decision-maker. Performance depends on multiple systems coordinating—and on what your environment quietly teaches you to value.
1Working memory is a whole-brain coordination process
A Nature Neuroscience study published 12 August 2026 analysed intracranial recordings from 35 patients. When brief high-frequency signals called ripples occurred simultaneously across distant regions, neuronal co-firing increased by about 30%. Coordination strengthened as participants held more information in mind and was associated with faster recognition.

Leadership application: Reduce cognitive overload. Use one primary outcome, no more than three immediate actions, a written visual reference, and retrieval practice rather than repeated explanation.
2Your environment can reward the wrong behaviour
Four preregistered experiments involving 1,176 participants, plus a reanalysis of earlier data, found that people automatically assigned value to irrelevant features of their actions—even when they knew those features did not predict reward. The paper was published in Nature Communications on 10 August 2026.

Real-estate leadership application: Audit what the organisation visibly celebrates. If attention consistently rewards busyness rather than appointments, correctly priced mandates, follow-up and closed transactions, activity may be conditioned without productivity.
Evidence check: The automatic-value result was reproduced across large, preregistered human experiments. The working-memory study measured human neurons directly but involved patients undergoing epilepsy monitoring and a controlled task.
Practical action: Complete this sentence and change one visible reward: “We say we value ______, but our meetings, recognition and attention currently reward ______.”
